Cedar 2.0 Moved iPhone Sync to iCloud

Cedar 2.0 changed how the iPhone and iPad app syncs. If you were signed in to a Cedar Account on iOS, this page explains exactly what happened, what you need to do, and what you do not.

Short version: nothing is lost. Your collection is still on your device, and it now syncs privately through your own iCloud instead of through our server. Your web account and everything in it is untouched.

What changed

Before 2.0, the iOS app could sign in to a free Cedar Account. That account backed your collection up to our server and kept it in step with the web app at cedarhumidor.app.

In 2.0 the iOS app has no sign-in at all. Sync runs through Apple's CloudKit, into the private iCloud container attached to your own Apple Account. In practice that means:

  • Your collection syncs between your iPhone and your iPad automatically, with nothing to configure beyond being signed in to iCloud.
  • We cannot see your collection. There is no Cedar server holding it any more. Not "we promise not to look" — there is no copy to look at.
  • There is no password to manage, no email to give us, and no account to delete.

Why we did it

Two reasons, honestly stated.

The first is privacy. An account we hold is data we can lose, and a catalogue of what you own is nobody's business but yours. Running sync through your own iCloud removes us from the equation entirely.

The second is that it makes the app simpler. No sign-up wall, no password reset, no "which account was this on again?" — the app opens straight to your collection the first time you launch it.

What this means for you

Your collection on iPhone and iPad

Nothing to do. Your records stayed on the device through the update and now sync via iCloud. If you use more than one Apple device with the same Apple Account, they will keep each other current.

If sync is not working, check Settings → iCloud on the device and confirm Cedar is switched on there, and that you are signed in to iCloud.

Your web account

Your web account at cedarhumidor.app still exists and still works, with everything that was in it. It is now an independent workspace rather than a mirror of your phone.

The web app also keeps its cigar journal, for recording what you thought of a cigar. That feature is web-only in 2.0.

Moving records between the two

Use export and import. On either side, Settings → Export gives you a lossless JSON file of everything, and that JSON imports back on the web or on a new device. It is a manual step rather than automatic sync, but nothing is stranded.

If you want your phone's current collection on the web: export the JSON from the iOS app, sign in on the web, and import it.

If you bought Pro on your iPhone

This is the one case that needs us. Because the iOS app no longer signs in, an App Store purchase can no longer be matched to a web account automatically.

If you bought Cedar Pro on iPhone and want Pro on the web as well, email hello@scalingwebapps.com with your App Store receipt and we will apply it to your web account by hand. You will not be asked to pay twice.

Pro on iPhone itself is unaffected — it continues to work, and restores through the App Store as normal.

Questions we expect

Will my Cedar Account be deleted? No. It stays until you delete it. If you would like it removed, email us and we will do it.

Can I still use both? Yes. Many people will use the iOS app on the move and the web app at a desk. They simply do not sync to each other automatically any more.

Is my data on your servers now? Only what is in your web account, if you have one. Anything on iPhone or iPad is on your device and in your own iCloud.

Is the iOS app still free to use? Yes, on the same terms as before: a full catalogue up to 20 entries, one humidor with unlimited condition logging, and five band scans. Cedar Pro lifts those limits.

FAQ

Do I need to do anything after updating to Cedar 2.0? No. Your collection carries over and starts syncing through iCloud on its own. The only action worth taking is checking that Cedar is enabled under Settings → iCloud.

What happened to my Cedar Account? It still exists and still works for the web app. The iPhone and iPad app no longer signs in to it, so the two are now independent.

How do I get my iPhone collection onto the web? Export a JSON file from Settings → Export in the iOS app, then import it on the web. The export is lossless.

I paid for Pro on iPhone — do I get Pro on the web? Email hello@scalingwebapps.com with your App Store receipt and we will apply it to your web account manually. Automatic matching is no longer possible now that iOS has no account.
